Best Restaurants in Roma Norte (Mexico City)

Roma Norte is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Mexico City for expats and tourists alike. In addition, it has some of the best restaurants. We often go to this neighborhood on the weekends simply to eat. There are so many good restaurants in Roma Norte to try. I want to stress that I have been to all of these restaurants, and I know there are more. This is not a comprehensive list. It is a list of some of my favorite places across a range price points. So check back as I continue to eat my way through the best restaurants in Roma Norte. A few places on my list: Contramar, Rosetta, El Tigre Silencio, Maximo Bistro, and more.

Orinoco ($)

You may have seen Orinoco in my post, The Beginner’s Guide to Three Days in Mexico City, and that’s because it is one of my favorite taquerias in the city. It is a place we take almost everyone who visits us. I highly recommend this northern-Mexico-style taco spot’s specials and the agua de jamaica (hibiscus juice). I particularly love the Nortena and the Trompo specials.

Lalo! ($$)

Lalo is a popular brunch place in Roma Norte that serves great French toast and one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches in Mexico City. I also love their chilaquiles. They’re open 8 AM to 5 PM, so perfect for breakfast or brunch. Make sure to get there before 1:30 PM if you want the brunch menu (they switch over to lunch in the afternoon).

Galanga ($$)

I lived in Thailand for three years, so I have extremely high standards when it comes to Thai food and Asian food in general. Galanga is well known as the Thai restaurant in Mexico City. It’s relatively high-end, and a great place for a date night. With a plant-filled space in a beautiful old Roma Norte building, I can see why it’s been named one of the best restaurants in Roma Norte, and in Mexico City in general.

Pollos Poncho ($)

This low-key tiny restaurant in the heart of Roma Norte is a favorite place for comfort food. They specialize in roasted chicken, and you can order anything from chicken tacos to an entire chicken. In addition, they have burritos, which are not something you find very often in Mexico City. If you want a really good chicken burrito, this is your spot. We also often just order their entire roasted chicken for delivery. It comes with tortillas (of course) and salsas.

Mythos ($$)

We were missing a good Greek place in Mexico City when we stumbled upon Mythos. With classic Greek food in a central location near Fuente Cibeles, this is a great spot for a weekend lunch in Roma Norte. They also have locations in Polanco and Santa Fe.

Milk Pizzeria ($$)

This casual pizza spot is a great place for dinner with friends or groups. They have a wide variety of pizza for easy, shareable options, and they are located in an area with many bars and restaurants to choose from in case you want to go out for a drink afterward.

Madre Cafe ($$$)

Madre Cafe is a popular weekend brunch/lunch spot located in a beautiful old Roma Norte mansion. Their rooftop is popular for large groups and those looking to do a boozy brunch, but I like their first-floor seating area just as well for a brunch with friends. The food is as good as the location.

Cafe de Nadie ($$$)

While I haven’t eaten that much food at this place, what I have has been good. Mostly, this is a great spot for after-work drinks on a Friday night. They have a wide variety of cocktail options and bio wines for all tastes, and I particularly like their french fries as a side snack.

Choza ($$)

I hesitated to add this place to my list because it is one of my favorite, best-kept secrets (maybe not so much anymore) in Mexico City. However, it is so good that it has to make the list. Choza is only open on the weekends and doesn’t have a website or Google listing. Their menu changes every week and is a fusion of Thai/Southeast Asian/Mexican. In my opinion, the very best Thai food you can find in Mexico City, and probably the best I’ve had since I left Thailand. I cannot recommend it enough.
