Best Restaurants in San Cristobal de las Casas

You can always thank my husband for finding places to eat on our trips. He is usually responsible for making Google Maps lists for everything from restaurants to cafes to cultural sites. Here are a few restaurants in San Cristobal de las Casas to try based on where we ate, and a few that are on our list. For more on San Cristobal de las Casas, check out my related posts:

Esquina San Augustin

Esquina San Augustin isn’t a restaurant, but rather a high-end food court in San Cristobal de las Casas. We discovered it on our first day there and went back several times because so many good places for lunch or dinner are in this complex. They also have various cafes and bars that are nice for a drink. If you don’t know where to go, just head here and you’ll most definitely find something.

Cafe Bar 500 Noches ($$)

Located in Esquina San Augustin, this little cafe has decent food, and what we liked best is that they have live music at night. My husband loves live jazz and Latin music, so any place that combines food and music is a great option for us.

Bangcook Tailandes ($$)

Maybe not what you’d expect in Mexico, but this Thai restaurant in San Cristobal (also located in Esquina San Augustin) had great Thai food and basically saved us from hunger after a long day trip to Sumidero Canyon. Enjoy Thai food in Mexico and maybe even a glass of wine.

Sarajevo Cafe Jardin ($$)

We found Sarajevo Cafe Jardin because it was right next to our hotel, and we ended up going there for breakfast two days in a row. Located in an old San Cristobal House, the ambiance is welcoming, with plants all around. They have great breakfast and coffee and are also open for lunch and dinner.

Tierra y Sol ($$$)

On our last night in San Cristobal de las Casas, we decided to splurge and try Tierra y Sol. This restaurant serves Chiapas cuisine by Chefs Marta Zepeda and Kievf Rueda. It is located in a mansion in the Historic Center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, which used to be the family home of Marta Zepeda. The place is steeped in history, not to mention the amazing food. It was a great choice, and I’d highly recommend the seasonal tasting menu for anyone visiting San Cristobal.

El Secreto ($$$)

Located in Casa de Alma hotel, El Secreto is a beautiful restaurant. We went there for lunch right after we arrived in San Cristobal, but I would recommend it for dinner. I can see it having a really nice vibe at night, and the food is excellent. I recommend trying the Chipilin Soup – a Chiapas speciality. Chipilin is a legume native to the region, and you’ll find this interesting ingredient on menus throughout restaurants in San Cristobal de las Casas.

Casa Lum ($$)

We didn’t make it to this restaurant (there just weren’t enough meals!), however it’s one that came highly recommended, and I would definitely try it next time we visit. Located in Casa Lum hotel, this restaurant was one we saw on many lists.
